is there a good site to get valuations for old cars for restoration projects?

Friday, February 5th, 2010

I am looking to determine the best old car to restore, and if I could find the values of the ones I am looking at as they sit, not finished cars, this would be a great help

If you want to restore cars to make money, it’s unlikely to work as it takes a lot of money and time. I’d recommend picking a make of car you love, join the appropriate car club and learn as much as you can about it. Often the club newsletter is the best way to learn what cars in various states of restoration are worth, and you can get invaluable advice from genuine experts. I did this when I was looking to buy an older Bentley and I wound up getting a true bargain on an unrestored, but beautifully original car. However, I would not make money if I sold it, because the maintenance and repair costs have exceeded what the car is worth. I did it because I love the cars, not for the money.

Whats the difference betwwen working on new and old cars?

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

My uncle said its easier to work on old cars then new
why is that?
do you need spcial tools for old cars?
Whats consider to be old cars like 80’s 70’s?

Cars from the early 70’s and before did not have computer controls, you did not need a lot of special tools to work on them In fact, all that was really needed was a good set of wrenches, sockets, screwdrivers, a torque wrench, timing light and tach/ dwell meter to do most repairs. There was not a lot of emission control items (if any) that were in the way, and with most cars there was plenty of room to work.

Today’s cars are computer controlled, and you need special tools and equipment to work on them.

Are old mustang cars suppose to be cool?

Friday, January 29th, 2010

My husband is obsessed with his 87 Mustang Gt 5.0. Its old as heck, loud, and personally I think those cars are ugly. He even wants me to drive it around but Im embarrassed! Ive seen other people driving around in them and putting them in car shows and stuff. I just don’t get what the big deal is!
Are these old cars suppose to be head turners or something?
Just, what is so special about these old mustangs?

well an 87 isn’t old as heck…but yeah those one’s are not very pretty, but can have loads of power. especially the 5.0 GT’s. I’ve got a 1965 mustang, and i’m obsessed with it as well. i’m glad your husband is proud of his, it’s something to be proud of.

Do the Police Like Having Civilians Driving Around in Old Cop Cars?

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

We have all seen ordinary people driving around in ex-police cars. I have always wondered if the police like having people driving around in their old cars. Like maybe it looks like there are way more police patrolling a town than there actually are.

So do police officers like people driving around in old cops cars or could they not care less either way?

We could care less.

Are there any old cars that are fuel efficient?

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

When I say old, I don’t mean something built a few years ago. I mean cars that were built in the 1950’s or 1960’s. Realizing, of course, they weren’t as efficient as today’s cars, and I’m pretty sure that in the 1950’s there weren’t any cars that got 36 miles per gallon. What I do mean is, were there any cars that got 20 miles per gallon or so?
If there are any cars like that, what are they?

Sure. V8 engines were not the main engine out there. Mostly 6’s, and there were foreign cars out there from England, France, Germany, Italy with 4 cylinder engines. V8 did not appear till 1955 in Chev. The 6’s would get in the 40’s hwy driving.
My parents 1967 Chev Impala 327V8 got 32 on average with automatic transmission.
My parents 1960 Buick Electra 455 got 20.
So the new cars have not improved(as far as I am concerned) – they have gotten smaller, lighter, but are thirstier. And one cannot fiddle with the carburator, and timing like we could with the older cars to improve on it.
