How much trouble/money is it to restore an old muscle car?
Sunday, December 27th, 2009So yes, I have been watching all of the fast and the furious series, and yes I would LOVE to be able to restore a muscle car like the protagonist did in Tokyo drift, and like Logan and Brian won in the street race in 2 fast 2 furious.
I am just wondering how much it usually costs to restore like old mustangs/novas/camaros…etc and how difficult it is to get parts.
Thanks!
Lots and lots. It all depends what you want out of the car. do you want it for a daily driver, a show car, a trailer queen? These are some of the things that will have to be thought before you even start. Parts for these are fairly easy to acquire as they are not that old. Now finding someone to work on this old iron stock is another thing.

Sorta like driving a classic automobile; do you ever use film just for the nostalgia or for the fun of it?
Sunday, December 27th, 2009
I wouldn’t call my reasoning for still using film nostalgia really… It’s really a large combination of aspects. First, I love the process. The feeling of seeing an image that I’ve taken come into existance in the developer bath is one that simply can’t be replaced. Since this is just what I do for my own personal enjoyment, I don’t need to worry about issues like workflow and efficiency.
Second, there’s a certain something about a silver print that just still blows me away. Not to mention (though I’ve not as much experience as of late with it) the look of a properly exposed chrome that’s just amazing.
Lastly, I spend a good majority of my time at the desk job in front of the computer, I’m not sure I would enjoy spending more for reviewing my shots and paring them down and weeding out the ones which were admirable attempts of a horribly flawed idea.
Then again, I’m sure people will call me outdated, with the emulsion lifts and the like, but it’s a hobby, and slowly becoming a hobby that pays for itself. (got a few sales from this year’s show)
When speaking of old cars, what is the protecto plate?
Sunday, December 27th, 2009I have an old car for sale, and I have read ads for other old cars and they mention having the original warranty card and the protecto plate. What is the protecto plate? Does this make the car more valuable? and by how much.
Can someone help me with this?
The Protect-O-Plate was furnished with all cars and was a metal plate imprinted at the assembly plant. The plate contained information on various standard or optional equipment. You may determine from the imprinted information on the plate the type of engine, transmission, rear axle, exterior color, the month the vehicle was produced, and other basic vehicle information.
This plate was included with the warranty book and was not attached to the car.
For the serious collector having this type of original documentation means a lot, but by itself I don’t think the protecto plate makes the car more valuable.
Classic / antique auto insurance in ny cheap?
Sunday, December 27th, 2009Im looking to get cheap classic auto insurance. for a car thats more than 25 years old. Its going to be a show car, and rarely be driven.
Liability only.
I live in NY, so company must be available in NY, and be cheap.
Thanks.
Classic & antique auto insurance is always full coverage (based on the current value) & always very cheap. You will need a full time use vehicle for every driver in your household & the vehicle must not be driven more than 1500 miles per yr, mostly for shows, etc.
Try a local independent agent & see if they write with Condon & Skelly. They are my favorite for antique auto insurance.
Other companies (brokers actually) would be JCTaylor & Hagerty.
What is the difference between the Ipod classic and Ipod video?
Sunday, December 27th, 2009Dude its like the exact same thing isn’t it. Except the ipod classic has the half screen thing. Should I trade in my Ipod video 30gb for an ipod classic. If so, why is the classic so much better.
All iPods (except the shuffle, of course) now play video, so there is no longer any reason to distinguish the iPod classic as a video-playing iPod.
Your iPod video occupied the same place in the iPod product matrix as the new iPod classic. They are essentially different versions of the same product. The iPod classic is just newer, slimmer, higher-capacity, and has a less-glossy but very attractive finish. It also has a 6G interface, which sports CoverFlow and some visual enhancements.
The iPod classic comes in 80GB and 160GB configurations: it’s designed to be big enough to (in principle) support ALL your photos, music, podcasts, video podcasts, and several full-length movies at once. Compare the 80GB iPod classic to the next-biggest iPod Apple sells, the iPod touch in 16GB or the iPod nano in 8GB—it’s a huge difference.
I can see no downside to upgrading from a 30GB iPod video to an 80GB or 160GB iPod classic, unless you don’t like the interface on the 6G iPods. I’m ambivalent about them: on the one hand it shows a lot of polish, but on the other hand, whenever I see the ’split screen’ effect in the menus, it looks wrong to me. Call me a purist. But if I owned one, I suppose I would get used to it, and everything else about the interface is really nice.
Still, your 30GB iPod video isn’t that much bigger than the 16GB of the iPod touch, or the 8GB iPod nano. If your music library is already larger than will fit on your iPod, and you’re managing it manually, consider that an ‘upgrade’ might be to trade some of that space for a smaller-capacity iPod with a nicer interface (like the touch) or the very small iPod nano.
Ultimately, it will be up to your budget and preferences to decide.
What is the most interesting element of a vintage car or collector’s car?
Sunday, December 27th, 2009I am an architect and designing a building for a car collector… looking for some inspiration and looking for some opinions.
The Red Dot Design Museum in Essen, Germany has a polished raw BMW car body hanging in the entryway. Very dramatic. Go to http://en.red-dot.org/371.html for some inspiration
